A True Master – Bertil Vallien’s later works, reflecting where he stands as an artist today
October 18 2025 – March 29 2026, at Kosta Boda Art Gallery.
From the very beginning, Bertil Vallien—by his own account—has been both captivated by and in constant struggle with the many amazing, seductive qualities of glass. Early on, he left behind the elegantly cut crystal. In his groundbreaking sand castings, he discovered his own truth through a rawer, more poetic expression.
On his visionary journey toward the melting point of glass, in continuous dialogue and collaboration with the master craftsmen at the glassworks, he has invented and refined an entirely personal artistic language—far beyond old traditions and techniques.
Quote
"Glass has a quality that is truly exceptional. No other material can fascinate in the same way, create such optical effects, or evoke reflections on both permanence and impermanence. Even after all these years, it’s still just as exciting to open the annealing oven and witness the glowing, dangerous molten glass transform into ice and cold.”
